What is the Colonial Compass Course?
The Colonial Compass Course is a district-wide experience designed for all middle school students in the Colonial School District. Its purpose is to help students prepare for high school and begin exploring future career possibilities.

Throughout the course, students will:

  • Develop a strong sense of personal identity and self-awareness

  • Learn what it means to be high school ready—academically, socially, and emotionally

  • Explore high school pathways and the many career opportunities connected to them

  • Set meaningful academic and personal goals

  • Build foundational financial literacy knowledge

  • Understand key employability skills needed in the workplace

Ultimately, the Colonial Compass Course empowers students to make informed decisions about their futures, gain confidence in who they are, and take the next steps toward success.

When does this course meet?
This course meets every week starting mid-September. Students will have access to Colonial Compass materials through Schoology.

What are the main instructional materials?
The main instructional materials come from Delaware Department of Labor workbooks (Career Compass and Career Heroes), Major Clarity – an online career exploration program, and homegrown materials made from our own teachers (middle school and high school) and the District Work-Based Learning coordinator.

As a parent, can I see any of these materials?
Absolutely.  We have loaded all the course materials into Schoology in a course called “Colonial Compass”.   As long as you have your parent Schoology access code, you can see these materials just like your child’s other courses.  Also, using their Chromebook, your child can log into Major Clarity at any time. We encourage you to work with your child to explore different careers and monitor the “My Career Plan” page. Activities in Major Clarity are intuitive, meaning it adjusts for your child as they continue the work in the program.

Is this for every student?
Absolutely.  Each grade level has its own curriculum, and it will evolve over the three middle school years such that 8th graders are high school ready. It will also help these students select the best degree program at William Penn High School.   (There’s over 20 to choose from…)
